urgent to remove kids' bedroom mold or diy?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I just found patches of black mold in the corner of their bedroom closet, behind some boxes. We've lived in this Jumeirah Park villa for about three years and never had an issue until now. Given the kids' health, how urgently do I need to get a professional mold remediation company involved, or is this something I can handle myself with a bleach solution this weekend?

Any visible mold growth in a child's bedroom, especially with ongoing respiratory symptoms, warrants immediate attention. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and year-round AC use creates ideal conditions for mold, often due to a hidden moisture source like a small condensation leak or capillary seepage through the villa's exterior walls.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, a DIY approach may be sufficient if the moisture source is identified and fixed. However, using bleach is not recommended; it can set the surface stain but often fails to kill the root structure embedded in porous materials like drywall or plaster. A better DIY solution is a dedicated mold remover or a diluted white vinegar solution, applied with proper personal protection (N95 mask, gloves).

Given the location behind boxes and the children's persistent coughing, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg, and the wall cavity behind it could harbour significant growth. A reputable inspector will use a borescope to check inside the wall and may recommend air quality testing to identify spore types and concentrations, which is crucial for determining health risks and the correct remediation protocol. This diagnostic step is essential for ensuring the problem is fully resolved and your children's environment is safe.
