Urgent to remove shower mold or can I DIY?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just pulled back the rubber seal around the shower door and found a bunch of black and green mold. It’s been so humid lately that the window doesn’t seem to help. How urgent is it to get this professionally cleaned, or can I handle it myself safely before it gets worse?

It's urgent to address, but you can likely handle this initial cleanup yourself if the area is small and you're not experiencing health symptoms. The high humidity in Dubai, especially during summer, creates ideal conditions for mold growth in bathrooms where ventilation is inadequate.

For a small area under the shower seal, a thorough DIY cleaning is a good first step. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a dedicated mold-killing cleaner or a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach. The critical step is to dry it completely immediately after cleaning—use a fan or a hairdryer on a cool setting to ensure no moisture remains behind the seal.

However, professional assessment is recommended if the mold returns quickly after cleaning, if it has penetrated behind tiles or into drywall, or if household members have respiratory issues. Persistent musty odors often indicate hidden growth within walls or under flooring that DIY cleaning cannot reach. In the UAE's climate, this underlying moisture problem must be identified and resolved to prevent recurrence.

A professional inspection can identify the moisture source—often condensation from AC systems or a small leak—and use tools like moisture meters to check for hidden dampness. For extensive or recurring problems, lab testing of a swab can identify the mold species, which guides the appropriate remediation protocol.
