Urgent to treat apartment mold or DIY with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I’ve just pulled out the shoe rack from our bedroom closet in our Jumeirah apartment and found a patch of black fuzzy stuff on the wall behind it, about the size of a dinner plate. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, but I have no idea how long it’s been growing. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with a bleach solution this weekend?

That black patch behind your shoe rack is a common issue in Dubai apartments, particularly on exterior walls where condensation can form from the constant AC use. The urgency depends on the mold type and the wall's condition.

For a patch that size (a dinner plate), DIY is possible if the wall is solid and the mold is surface-level. However, bleach is not recommended; it's mostly water and can feed mold deeper in porous materials like drywall or paint. A more effective DIY solution is a mix of distilled white vinegar and water or a dedicated fungicidal cleaner. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and ensure excellent airflow to prevent regrowth.

Given your children's coughing, professional assessment is strongly advised. The visible patch is often just the fruiting body; the root structure can extend deeper into the wall. A certified inspector can identify the species—some types like Aspergillus are more problematic for respiratory issues—and use moisture meters to find the source, which is critical. The problem will recur if the underlying moisture issue (like a small condensation leak or inadequate insulation in the wall) isn't fixed.

In Dubai, remediation often involves removing affected drywall or insulation to ensure it's彻底解决. For health concerns with children present, a professional inspection that includes air quality testing is the most reliable way to identify the risk and guide appropriate remediation.
