Urgent to treat black mold in closet or can it wait?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a spreading patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and we've had the AC running constantly, but I'm worried this has been growing for a while. My main concern is how quickly we need to act – is this something we need to get professionally treated like, tomorrow, or can it wait until the weekend for a DIY cleaning?

Black mold in a closet on an interior wall is a sign of a persistent moisture issue, likely from the high humidity being absorbed into the wall or from a hidden condensation leak from an AC pipe. Given Dubai's climate, this won't resolve on its own and the root cause must be identified.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself this weekend with proper precautions. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a detergent solution, not bleach, as bleach doesn't kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality. Thoroughly dry the area with a fan afterward.

However, if the mold returns quickly, has a strong musty odor, or the patch is larger, it indicates a deeper problem within the wall cavity. In these cases, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to locate the moisture source and assess the full extent. Remediation can then be planned to properly resolve it, as simply cleaning surface growth is often a temporary fix. The urgency for professional help is high if you have infants, elderly residents, or anyone with asthma or immune issues in the home.
