Urgent to treat black mold in closet or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom walk-in closet in our Mirdif villa has felt damp for the past couple of weeks, and I just pulled out my winter jackets to find a few of them covered in fuzzy black spots on the shoulders. It's been so humid lately, even with the AC running constantly. How urgently do I need to deal with this, and is it something I can clean myself or should I call a professional company straight away?

Based on your description, this is a situation that requires immediate professional attention. The combination of a persistent damp feeling, visible fuzzy black growth on organic materials like jackets, and the high ambient humidity in Dubai are classic indicators of an active mold infestation. This is not a simple surface issue you can wipe away.

The urgency is high. That damp feeling indicates elevated moisture levels within the closet's structure itself—likely the drywall or backing. Mold roots (hyphae) can penetrate porous materials, meaning even if you clean the visible spots on the jackets, the problem is growing unseen. Constant AC use can sometimes create cold spots that exacerbate condensation, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like closets.

Attempting a DIY clean is strongly discouraged. Disturbing the mold by wiping or brushing it will aerosolize the spores, potentially spreading the contamination throughout your bedroom and HVAC system, leading to a much larger problem and potential health issues. Proper remediation requires containment, professional-grade HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment to address the root cause.

The regulations here in the UAE, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines for indoor environmental quality. A professional inspection is absolutely necessary to assess the full extent of the moisture source and the contamination. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to find the source, which could be a small leak, capillary rise, or severe condensation.

For a proper assessment and to prevent it from returning, you need a certified expert. Please call us immediately at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com so we can schedule an inspection and protect your home and health.
