Urgent to treat black mold in closet or DIY this weekend?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few black spots growing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It's an interior wall and with the humidity lately, the room just feels damp. I'm worried it's spreading behind the clothes. How quickly do I need to get a professional to handle this, or is it small enough that I can deal with it myself over the weekend?

Black spots in a closet on an interior wall are a common issue in Dubai, especially during humid periods when AC usage creates significant temperature differentials and condensation. Given the damp feeling you describe, the moisture source is likely ambient humidity condensing on the cooler wall surface, possibly exacerbated by poor air circulation behind the items stored there.

For a small, visible patch (under one square foot), a careful DIY approach this weekend can be acceptable if you address the moisture source. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Mix a solution of one part detergent or vinegar with four parts water, scrub the area, and allow it to dry completely. Discard any contaminated porous items like cardboard boxes. The critical step is to identify and rectify the cause; improve air circulation in the closet, ensure your AC is draining properly and consider using a desiccant or a small dehumidifier to manage humidity in that room.

However, if the mould is on both sides of the wall, if you detect a persistent musty odour, or if the drywall feels soft or damp to the touch, the growth is likely more extensive behind the surface. In these cases, or if anyone in the household has respiratory sensitivities, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the cavity and can determine if the wall assembly requires remediation. Spores can spread quickly through the AC system in our sealed environments, so prompt, proper action is key to preventing a larger issue.
