Urgent to treat black mold in Jumeirah bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots growing along the corner of our master bedroom wall, behind the wardrobe. It's an interior wall in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated, or is this something I can handle myself with a bleach spray?

That black spot pattern behind your wardrobe is a common sight in Dubai apartments, especially during humid periods. It’s likely mold feeding on condensation that forms on the cooler wall surface, a frequent issue with year-round AC use.

You should address this promptly. For a small, surface-level area (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. However, do not use bleach. It is mostly water, which feeds the mold roots, and the chlorine evaporates quickly, leaving stains and failing to address the root cause. A better DIY solution is a mix of distilled white vinegar and water or a dedicated commercial mold remover. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and ensure the room is well-ventilated. Crucially, identify and rectify the moisture source. This is almost always poor airflow. Move the wardrobe a few inches from the wall and use a dehumidifier to keep the room's humidity below 60%.

If the mold returns quickly, has a strong musty odor, covers a larger area, or if you see evidence of water staining from a possible leak, professional assessment is necessary. Remediation involves more than cleaning; it requires isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and treating the wall with antimicrobial solutions to prevent regrowth. In the UAE, reputable providers follow IICRC standards for this process. A professional inspection can determine the extent of the problem and identify any hidden moisture issues within the wall cavity that DIY methods cannot fix.
