Urgent to treat growing black mold in bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it’s gotten bigger since I first spotted it a couple of weeks ago. My main worry is that with the humidity rising again, it’s going to spread quickly. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar solution first?

That black mold growth is a clear sign of excess moisture and should be addressed promptly, especially with Dubai's humidity rising. Its recent growth indicates an active problem that will likely accelerate.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can attempt to clean it yourself with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution. However, given its location on an exterior wall and its recurrence, the underlying cause is almost certainly more than just surface humidity. This suggests a potential breach in the building envelope or persistent condensation within the wall cavity that you cannot see. DIY cleaning will only remove the visible growth, not solve the moisture source.

In the UAE climate, where air conditioning runs constantly, the temperature differential between the cold interior and hot, humid exterior walls creates a perfect environment for condensation and hidden mold growth. The mold you see is often just the tip of the iceberg.

For this specific situation, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the source of the water intrusion behind the wall. Treating the root cause—whether it's a minor leak, insufficient insulation, or a crack—is the only way to prevent it from returning. A proper remediation will also contain the area to prevent spores from spreading into your living space during cleanup. It's more urgent to get it diagnosed correctly now than to have a much larger, hidden problem later.
