Urgent to treat mold behind sofa or DIY this weekend?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I just pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Jumeirah villa and found a large patch of black and green mold spreading behind it, probably from the last time we had the AC condensation leak. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated, or is this something I can handle myself with a bleach solution this weekend?

That is a situation that requires immediate professional assessment, not a DIY bleach solution. The visible black and green patch is a significant indicator of a moisture problem, and its location behind furniture suggests it has been growing undisturbed for some time.

In Dubai's climate, AC condensation leaks are a primary cause of indoor mold. The high humidity provides a constant source of moisture for mold to thrive, especially in hidden, poorly ventilated spaces. A patch large enough to be described as "spreading" indicates a substantial colony. Disturbing it yourself, even with bleach, can aerosolize a high concentration of spores and mycotoxins throughout your living space, potentially worsening your children's respiratory symptoms.

Bleach is also surface-level and ineffective on porous materials like drywall or the backing of the sofa itself, where the mold's root system (hyphae) penetrates deeply. It may bleach the colour away, giving a false sense of success, while the organism remains alive and ready to regrow.

For a case like this, the recommended course is a professional inspection. They will identify the exact moisture source (the AC drain line is a likely culprit) and assess the full extent of the contamination, which is often worse than what is visible. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing contaminated materials, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air. Addressing the root cause is the only way to prevent rapid recurrence. Given the symptoms in your children, treating this with professional urgency is the safest approach for your family's health.
