Urgent to treat mold in closet or can I wait?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Jumeirah. With the humidity creeping up again, I'm worried it will get worse fast. How quickly do I need to get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can handle myself this weekend?

That black spot in your closet is a sign of condensation forming on a cold wall, a very common issue in Dubai villas due to the high outdoor humidity and constant AC cooling. You should address it this weekend.

The wall facing the outside is likely a "cold bridge," where the temperature difference causes moisture from the humid air to condense, creating the perfect environment for mold. With humidity rising, the growth can accelerate quickly, potentially spreading to your stored clothing. For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot), you can handle it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean the area with a diluted white vinegar solution or a dedicated mold cleaner, then dry it thoroughly. Identify and address the moisture source; this is often insufficient airflow in the closet. Leave the door ajar and consider a small desiccant dehumidifier.

If the mold has a strong, musty odor, covers a larger area, or has penetrated the drywall or plaster (it feels soft or spongy), it's time for a professional inspection. They can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to locate the exact condensation point and assess the wall's integrity. Remediation in such cases involves proper containment and removal of affected materials to prevent spores from spreading to other home areas. For verification, a lab test can identify the mold species, which is useful for individuals with specific health concerns.
