Urgent to treat mold in humid Marina apartment?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I’ve just pulled out some winter clothes from the back of the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a bunch of them covered in black spots, and the wall behind feels damp. This is in our Marina apartment which we’ve been in for about a year. Given how humid it's been lately, how urgently do I need to get this professionally treated before it becomes a major health issue?

Yes, this requires immediate professional assessment. The damp wall and visible mold on clothing indicate an active moisture issue that's likely spreading behind surfaces. In Dubai's high humidity, especially in coastal areas like Marina, mold can colonize rapidly—within 24-48 hours of dampness.
For your children's persistent cough, this environment is a significant irritant. Mold spores become airborne during disturbance, worsening respiratory symptoms. Do not attempt to clean this yourself with bleach or over-the-counter sprays, as this can aerosolize spores and exacerbate the problem. The wall's dampness suggests a possible leak or severe condensation issue that needs source identification first. A certified mold inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the moisture source—often a leaking AC condensate drain pipe, poor insulation, or external water intrusion—which is critical for a permanent fix. They should also take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the species, as some types common in humid climates require more aggressive containment during remediation. The remediation process itself involves isolating the area, removing contaminated porous materials like the affected clothing and possibly sections of drywall, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air. Simply wiping the surface is insufficient. Once the source is fixed and the mold is properly removed, you can prevent recurrence by using a dehumidifier, ensuring your AC unit is regularly serviced and draining correctly, and improving wardrobe ventilation. |
