Urgent: trat black mold in damp closet now or wait« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a cluster of small black spots growing in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our building in Jumeirah Lakes Towers, and it feels slightly damp. Considering how humid it's been this summer, is this something I need to get treated immediately or can it wait a couple of weeks?

Treat it immediately. Black spots with dampness in a JLT closet, especially on an external wall during a humid Dubai summer, indicate an active moisture problem that will only worsen. The high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth through condensation.
The primary concern is identifying and stopping the moisture source. It's likely condensation forming on the cooler external wall, but it could also be a small leak from the building envelope. Wipe the area with a damp cloth and detergent to remove surface growth, but this is only a temporary measure. Do not use bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots and can release harmful fumes in an enclosed space. For a proper resolution, you need a professional inspection. They will use a moisture meter to pinpoint the exact source of the dampness—whether it's interstitial condensation or an external leak. Remediation involves correcting the insulation or sealing issue on the wall and then properly treating the mold. Leaving it for weeks allows the colony to expand and potentially release more spores into your bedroom air, which can cause irritation and worsen allergies. Given the location on your winter clothes, ensure you wash or dry-clean them thoroughly before next use, as spores can cling to fabrics. A company with a microbiology lab can provide a culture to identify the mold type, which is the best way to assess any specific health risks and confirm the cleanup was effective. |
