Urgent: treat AC mold behind wardrobe for kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but it's in a corner that's always a bit damp from the AC condensation. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated before it affects our health?

Given the dampness from AC condensation and your children's symptoms, this should be addressed promptly. The persistent humidity and year-round AC use in Dubai create ideal conditions for mold growth in concealed areas like behind furniture. The cough could be a reaction to the spores now being disturbed.

While often called "black mold," the color doesn't definitively identify the species. Many dark-colored molds are common allergens but not the extremely toxic types. However, any active colony can produce irritants that affect sensitive individuals, especially children.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection is recommended. They can assess the extent of the growth hidden within the wall and identify the species through lab testing to determine the actual risk. DIY cleaning often fails to address the root moisture problem and can aerosolize a high concentration of spores, temporarily worsening the indoor air quality.

The urgency is driven by the health symptoms. Remediation involves more than wiping the visible spots; it requires fixing the condensation issue, properly containing the area during removal, and verifying with post-remediation testing that the spore count has returned to normal levels. Focus on companies that provide documented before-and-after data from their testing.
