Urgent: treat mold under rug or DIY with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I just pulled back the big rug in our Jumeirah villa's living room and found a bunch of black spots on the concrete floor underneath, probably from when the AC drain leaked a couple of months ago. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with bleach over the weekend?

Stop using bleach immediately. It's ineffective on porous surfaces like concrete and can worsen the problem by adding moisture mold feeds on. The black spots indicate active growth, likely fed by Dubai's high humidity seeping into the concrete long after the initial leak.

Given the symptoms and the scale (a "bunch" under a "big rug"), this requires professional assessment. The primary risk is that the mold has penetrated the concrete slab, which is common here due to condensation and capillary action. Disturbing it yourself with improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening your kids' respiratory irritation.

For a villa in Jumeirah, the remediation process typically involves containment of the area, HEPA vacuuming of all surface spores, abrasive removal of the contaminated concrete surface, and application of an antimicrobial sealant. This is not a DIY task. The urgency is high due to the health symptoms; schedule an inspection within the next few days.

Before remediation, keep the rug rolled back and the area well-ventilated. Do not attempt to scrub or spray the area yourself. A proper inspection will include moisture mapping to ensure the leak is fully resolved and no residual dampness remains in the slab, which is critical to prevent rapid regrowth.
