Vinegar or pro for closet mold and mildew smell?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to get these small black spots on the back, and all our clothes have a damp, mildew smell that won't go away. It's been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. Is this something I can tackle with a vinegar spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company to stop it for good?

Vinegar or bleach can remove surface mold on non-porous surfaces, but it’s a temporary fix for your closet. The issue is likely inside the wall itself. Dubai’s high humidity, especially combined with year-round AC use, causes condensation within external walls – a perfect environment for hidden mold growth that will keep returning.

The persistent mildew smell on your clothes confirms the mold is active and likely more extensive than the visible spots. Spraying the surface won’t address the root cause. For a permanent solution, you need to identify and eliminate the moisture source, which often requires a professional inspection.

A proper assessment involves using a moisture meter to find the condensation point within the wall cavity and possibly an infrared camera to see the extent of the problem. The wall may need to be opened to dry it out and treat the structure. Until the source is fixed, the mold will recur.

I would recommend a professional assessment. Look for a provider that offers a diagnostic inspection with documented moisture readings, not just a cleaning quote. They should explain the exact cause and remediation plan. For clothing, wash with hot water and a mold-inhibiting detergent, but the smell will return if the closet isn’t remediated.
