Vinegar or pro for closet mold in Dubai humidity?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to get these black speckles in the corners, and it's definitely gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month. All our winter clothes and spare linens are stored in there, and I'm worried they're getting ruined. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in one of those professional mold removal companies in Dubai?

Small black speckles in a closet on an exterior wall during humid months are a classic sign of condensation-related mold growth, very common in Dubai. The wall is likely cooler than the room's air, causing moisture to condense and create the perfect damp environment for mold, especially on stored organic materials like cotton linens.
For a small, surface-level area (less than one square meter), a DIY approach can be effective. A distilled white vinegar solution is a good starting point; it can help disrupt many common mold types. However, it is not a registered fungicide and may not prevent regrowth. Thoroughly empty the closet. Wipe the affected areas with the vinegar solution, then follow with a damp cloth of plain water and dry the surface completely. Sun-drying any affected fabrics is highly recommended. The critical step is addressing the moisture source. Improve air circulation by not overpacking the closet and occasionally leaving the door ajar. Consider a small, quiet dehumidifier or desiccant bags for that enclosed space. If the mold has penetrated the drywall, appears furry, covers a larger area, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is warranted. They can identify the specific species and its potential health risks and assess if there is a hidden moisture issue within the wall cavity itself. For valuable clothing and linens you're concerned about, a professional remediation company can also provide specialized cleaning to salvage them. In many cases, the cost of assessment and targeted treatment is justified to protect your health and property from a recurring problem that DIY methods can't resolve. |
