Vinegar spray or professional for Jumeirah villa mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind the wardrobe in the master bedroom. It’s been crazy humid lately and I’m worried it’s mold. Is this something I can tackle with a vinegar spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in one of those professional mold removal companies?

Based on the description of your Jumeirah villa, specifically the black spots spreading behind a wardrobe, this is a classic case of mold growth exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and condensation issues. While a vinegar solution can temporarily address minor surface mold on non-porous materials, it is not a remediation strategy.

The location behind a wardrobe is a significant concern. This indicates a severe lack of air circulation, leading to moisture entrapment—a common issue in our climate where year-round AC use can create cold spots and condensation on walls. The mold you see on the surface is likely just the fruiting body; the hyphae (root system) will have penetrated deep into the gypsum board (drywall). Surface cleaning with vinegar will not address this embedded growth, and the problem will return rapidly.

Furthermore, improper handling, such as spraying it, can aerosolize spores and contaminate other areas of your home, including your AC system, which acts as a vector for spreading contamination throughout the property.

For a villa in Jumeirah, professional assessment and remediation are strongly advised. Dubai Municipality has guidelines for proper mold remediation to ensure it is handled safely and effectively, preventing recurrence. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the full extent of the problem, the source of the moisture, and provide a protocol for safe containment, removal of affected materials, and application of EPA-approved biocides, not household products.
