What are black mold health risks and safe cleaning?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner behind the wardrobe, where the wall meets the floor. Since the humidity really kicked in, my husband has had a constant stuffy nose and a cough that won't go away. What kind of health risks does this pose and what's the safest way for us to clean it ourselves?

Good question. This is a very common issue here in Dubai, especially in older buildings in coastal areas like Jumeirah. The high ambient humidity, combined with potential AC condensation issues or minor leaks, creates the perfect breeding ground for mold.
Regarding health risks, the symptoms you're describing in your husband are classic indicators of mold exposure. While the term "black mold" (often Stachybotrys chartarum) is notoriously feared, all molds can pose health risks, especially in enclosed spaces. The primary risks are allergic reactions (stuffy nose, coughing, wheezing, eye irritation) and for those with compromised immune systems or pre-existing conditions like asthma, it can trigger more severe reactions. Prolonged exposure is the biggest concern. For a small patch (under 1 square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself, but SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT. Do not just wipe it. The process must be controlled. 1. Containment: Seal off the area from the rest of the apartment with plastic sheeting if possible. Wear an N95 respirator mask, goggles, and disposable gloves. 2. Cleaning: Do NOT use bleach. It is largely ineffective on porous surfaces and can release harmful fumes. Instead, use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide or a simple solution of white vinegar or a diluted detergent. Scrub the area thoroughly. 3. Disposal: Place all cleaning rags, sponges, and any other contaminated materials into a sealed plastic bag before disposing of them. However, a critical point: cleaning the surface mold does not address the underlying moisture problem. The real danger is what you can't see. Mold spores can penetrate deep into the drywall and behind it. If there's a leak from an adjacent pipe or the building's envelope, the problem will simply return, often worse. Given the symptoms are already present, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to identify the exact source of the moisture and the full extent of the colonization, which is almost always larger than what's visible. This is the only way to ensure a permanent solution and safeguard your health. For a proper assessment, please give our team a call at 800-MOLDS or email us at hello@saniservice.com. We can provide a detailed inspection and a remediation plan that follows UAE health and safety guidelines. |
