What are these black spots in my closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It’s gotten worse since the weather got really humid last month. What’s the best way to get rid of it for good, and should I be worried about our health?

Those black spots are almost certainly mold, a very common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity interacting with cool interior surfaces. The recent humid weather and the closet's interior wall location create a perfect environment for it—poor air circulation allows condensation to form, and the organic materials (like cotton or leather) provide a food source.
Health effects vary. For most, it causes allergy-like symptoms: congestion, sneezing, or skin irritation. Risk is higher for infants, the elderly, or those with asthma or compromised immune systems. The specific species matters, which requires professional testing to identify. To get rid of it for good, surface cleaning with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution is a temporary fix but won't address the root cause: excess moisture. You must identify and stop the moisture source. In many Dubai villas, this is condensation from poorly insulated exterior walls or AC units set too cold, creating a temperature differential. For a closet on an interior wall, the moisture is likely condensing from the humid air itself. Improve air circulation by leaving the closet door open periodically, using a dehumidifier, or ensuring your AC is effectively removing humidity from the entire room. For persistent or large-scale growth (over ~10 square feet), a professional inspection is recommended to identify hidden moisture and properly remediate it to prevent regrowth. |
