What is the best way to clean closet mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed small black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Jumeirah, and we never open that closet so it was hidden for a while. I'm really worried it's spreading behind the clothes. What's the best way to clean this properly and who should I call to fix the root cause, like a possible leak in the wall?

Small black spots in a closet on an exterior wall point to condensation or a hidden leak, both common in Dubai's climate. The high humidity outside meets the cool air-conditioned interior inside that wall, creating moisture that mold feeds on.
For a small, visible patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar with three parts water. Lightly spray the area, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and wipe clean. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push spores deeper into porous surfaces like drywall. Ensure the area is completely dry afterwards. However, the mold you see is likely just the surface manifestation. The root cause is moisture within the wall cavity, possibly from a tiny crack in the villa's external render or failing sealant around a window frame. This requires a professional assessment. You need a mold inspector to identify and fix the moisture source. They should use a thermal imaging camera to detect temperature differences in the wall that indicate dampness and a moisture meter to confirm the reading. Simply cleaning the surface without stopping the water intrusion is a temporary fix; the mold will return. For remediation behind the clothes or inside the wall, certified professionals should handle it to prevent cross-contamination. Always ask for a post-remediation verification test to confirm the space is measurably clean and dry. |
