What is the child-safe way to remove bathroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold growing in the corners of our main bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment. It’s been getting worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago, and no matter how much I scrub, the black spots just come back. What is the most effective and child-safe way to permanently get rid of this bathroom mold?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is extremely common due to high humidity and condensation from showers. For a child-safe initial clean, use undiluted white vinegar sprayed directly onto the mold; let it sit for an hour before scrubbing with a stiff brush. Baking soda paste is also a safe and effective abrasive. Avoid mixing chemicals, especially bleach, as it releases harsh fumes and only removes the surface stain, not the root structure.

The key to permanent removal is controlling moisture. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it vents outside, not just into the ceiling void. Wipe down wet walls and tiles with a squeegee after use. For persistent cases, a dehumidifier can help measurably reduce ambient humidity.

If the mold returns quickly despite thorough cleaning and moisture control, the growth is likely more extensive behind the tiles or in the grout. This is common in older buildings. At this point, DIY methods are insufficient and can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening the cough you've noticed. A professional inspection can identify the source of the moisture and the extent of the infestation. Remediation for family homes prioritizes containment and HEPA vacuuming to prevent spore spread, followed by antimicrobial treatments approved for use in occupied spaces.
