What kills black mold in bathroom and prevents it?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black over the last few weeks, and I just noticed it's also creeping up the wall behind the toilet. The AC is always on, but the room never feels completely dry. What's the most effective product I can pick up at ACE Hardware or a local store to kill this for good and prevent it from coming back?

That black discoloration is likely Cladosporium or Aureobasidium, two common molds in Dubai bathrooms. They thrive on the constant humidity from showers and condensation from AC units fighting the outdoor climate.
For a store-bought solution, look for a hydrogen peroxide-based mold remover or a concentrated chlorine bleach solution (check the label for sodium hypochlorite). These are more effective than vinegar in our high-humidity environment. Apply it directly to the grout, let it sit for the time specified on the product, then scrub with a stiff brush. Always ensure the room is well-ventilated during this process. Prevention is the real challenge. Killing surface mold doesn't address the spores in the air or the underlying moisture. After cleaning, run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet walls and squeegee the shower stall to remove standing water. The goal is to make the bathroom as dry as possible between uses. If the mold returns quickly or you've noticed it spreading to other areas like behind the toilet, the issue may be more than surface-level. Persistent, recurring mold often indicates a hidden moisture problem within the walls or under the tiles, which a store-bought cleaner cannot fix. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is needed to find the source before remediation can be successful. |
