What product kills shower mold in a damp bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years in Jumeirah Village Circle and just noticed these black, speckled patches spreading in the grout between the tiles right by the shower. The room doesn't have a window and even with the exhaust fan on, it always feels damp for hours. What's the most effective product I can buy locally to kill this and stop it from coming back?

The black speckled patches you're describing in your JVC bathroom grout are a classic case of mold growth, a common issue in Dubai due to our high ambient humidity and the condensation cycles created by year-round air conditioning. The persistent dampness you mention, even with the exhaust fan, indicates inadequate moisture control, which is the primary catalyst.

For a localized, surface-level issue, you can use a commercially available mold remover. In the UAE, look for products containing chlorine-based agents (like sodium hypochlorite, found in many bleaches) or hydrogen peroxide-based solutions. These are effective at killing surface mold. Apply the product directly to the grout, allow it to dwell for the time specified on the label to penetrate and kill the roots, then scrub and rinse thoroughly. However, these are temporary solutions. They address the visible growth but not the underlying moisture problem, meaning recurrence is highly probable.

It is critical to understand that if the mold has penetrated porous materials like grout or the wall behind the tiles, surface cleaning is insufficient. The root structure (hyphae) remains and will regrow. In such cases, professional assessment and remediation are required to prevent potential health issues and structural damage.

For a lasting solution, you must control the humidity. Ensure your exhaust fan is powerful enough for the room's volume and runs for at least 30-60 minutes after showering. Consider installing a humidity-controlled switch. Wiping down wet surfaces and fixing any plumbing leaks are also essential.

If the growth is extensive, has a musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, we strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified experts at Saniservice can conduct moisture mapping and air quality testing to determine the extent of the issue and implement a permanent remediation solution.
