What should I do about mold bathroom?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just noticed black spots spreading in the grout between the tiles near the shower. It’s been so humid lately that the exhaust fan can’t keep up. Given how quickly this seems to be growing, is this something I need to call a professional to handle immediately, or can I tackle it myself this weekend?

Black mould in bathroom grout is common in Dubai's high humidity, especially when exhaust fans can't keep up with shower steam. For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square foot), you can often handle it yourself. Start by mixing one part white vinegar with one part water or using a dedicated grout mould remover. Scrub the area thoroughly with a stiff brush, ensuring you're in a well-ventilated space.
However, given the musty smell and that it's spreading, the mould may have penetrated deeper behind the tiles. A persistent odour often indicates hidden growth in the wall cavity or under the sealant, which DIY cleaning won't reach. In such cases, and especially in apartment buildings where moisture can migrate to neighbouring units, a professional inspection is advised. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of the damage behind the tiles. Remediation may involve removing affected grout, treating the substrate, and resealing properly to prevent rapid regrowth, which is very common here due to our constant AC cycling and condensation. For verifiable results, any remediation should be followed by post-cleaning verification to confirm the spore count has been returned to a typical indoor level. |
