What's the best anti-mold treatment for a UAE bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black, and I just noticed a weird speckled pattern behind the toilet. It’s the windowless bathroom in my Jumeirah apartment. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it getting worse this past humid month. What’s the best way to treat this myself, and is there a specific brand of anti-mold paint or cleaner I should get from ACE Hardware that works best in our UAE climate?

The black grout and speckling are classic signs of bathroom mold, extremely common here due to our high humidity and condensation from temperature differences between the air-conditioned interior and the outdoor heat. For a DIY approach, start by addressing the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet tiles and glass with a squeegee.

For cleaning, a solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner is effective on non-porous surfaces. For grout, a stiff brush is essential. Avoid chlorine bleach; it only removes the surface colour and does not kill the roots, leading to quick regrowth. At ACE, look for anti-fungal additives you can mix into paint, not just "mold-resistant" paint. Brands like Jotun and Berger offer specific anti-mold paints formulated for humid climates, but their effectiveness depends entirely on a perfectly clean, dry, and pre-treated surface.

If the mold returns quickly after a thorough cleaning or if you see the speckled pattern on drywall, the growth is likely behind the tiles or within the wall. In windowless bathrooms, hidden moisture problems are a major risk. For persistent or widespread issues, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is recommended to find the hidden source before it causes structural damage.
