What's the best local mold cleaner for shower grout?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for about two years and just noticed black, speckly mold starting to grow in the grout between the tiles in the shower. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I think the bathroom exhaust fan isn't powerful enough. What's the most effective and safe product I can buy locally to clean this and stop it from coming back?

For a DIY solution, start with a basic, locally available product like a chlorine-based bathroom cleaner such as Dettol Mould & Mildew Remover or a generic thick bleach. Apply it directly to the dry grout, let it sit for 10-15 minutes to penetrate, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse thoroughly. The high humidity in Dubai, especially during summer, creates a perfect environment for mould, so this is a common issue.
For a stronger, non-chlorine option, look for a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner. These are effective and produce fewer harsh fumes, which is better for enclosed bathroom spaces. Always ensure the room is well-ventilated during cleaning. The key to stopping it from returning is addressing the moisture source. Your suspicion about the exhaust fan is likely correct. It should run during and for at least 20-30 minutes after a shower. If it’s weak, consider upgrading it. Wiping down wet surfaces after use to remove standing water can also help measurably reduce recurrence. If the mould is widespread, has penetrated deep into the grout, or returns quickly despite thorough cleaning, the issue may be more serious. In these cases, a professional inspection can identify hidden moisture problems within the walls and a lab test can confirm the mould type, which guides the correct remediation approach. |
