What's the best local product to kill bathroom mold for good?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black, and I noticed it’s started to spread to the ceiling corners. It’s in our villa in Mirdif, and we keep the exhaust fan running, but the humidity just never seems to go away, especially after everyone’s morning showers. What’s the most effective product I can find locally to kill this for good and stop it from coming back?

Bleach-based cleaners are commonly used, but they only remove surface discoloration and don't address the root cause, especially for porous surfaces like grout. In Dubai's high humidity, regrowth is almost certain without addressing the underlying moisture issue.

For a lasting solution, focus on moisture control first. Run your exhaust fan for at least 30-60 minutes after showering. Wipe down wet walls and squeegee glass doors to remove standing water. Consider a small dehumidifier for the bathroom if humidity consistently exceeds 60%.

For cleaning, a hydrogen peroxide-based solution or a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner is more effective than bleach at penetrating porous surfaces and killing the mold at its roots. These are available at most major hardware stores. However, if the growth has spread to the ceiling and is recurring despite your efforts, the issue may be more serious. The black discoloration could be Stachybotrys, which requires a different remediation approach. In villas, hidden moisture from a small leak in the plumbing or shower pan is a frequent cause of persistent mold.

For a case that continues to spread, a professional inspection is advised to identify any hidden water damage and the specific mold species present, which dictates the correct remediation protocol.
