What's the best local product to kill bathroom mold safely?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It's our main bathroom in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment, and we use it every day. I only spotted it properly this morning when the steam cleared after my shower. What's the most effective and safe product I can find locally to kill this for good?

The most effective and safe locally available product for bathroom mould is a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner, typically found as a 3% solution. For persistent grout mould, a paste made from baking soda and hydrogen peroxide can be more effective for scrubbing. Avoid chlorine bleach, as it only removes the surface colour and can damage grout over time, while the mould roots often remain.

In Dubai's climate, high humidity and constant AC use create a perfect environment for mould in bathrooms. The condensation from hot showers, combined with the cool air from AC vents, leads to persistent moisture in grout lines. Simply killing the visible mould is a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved.

After cleaning, improve ventilation by running the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wiping down wet surfaces. A small dehumidifier can also help measurably reduce ambient moisture. For recurring problems, the issue may be deeper within the wall or under the tiles, which surface cleaners cannot reach.

If your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms, the visible mould might be an indicator of a larger, hidden colony. In such cases, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling can identify the specific mould type and its source, which is crucial for determining the appropriate remediation strategy and ensuring the environment is safe.
