What's the best local product to kill black shower mold?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom's grout in the shower has started turning black in patches, especially in the corners. I'm in an older building in Bur Dubai and I think the recent humidity made it worse, as the exhaust fan isn't very powerful. It has a really damp, earthy smell that hits you when you walk in. What's the most effective product I can find locally to kill this and stop it from coming back?

The black patches in your shower grout are likely Cladosporium or Aureobasidium, both common in Dubai's humid bathrooms where ventilation is poor. For a localized problem, most supermarkets and hardware stores in the UAE carry concentrated chlorine bleach or hydrogen peroxide-based cleaners.

A chlorine bleach solution (one part bleach to four parts water) applied directly to the grout, left for 10-15 minutes, then scrubbed is effective for surface mold. For a less harsh option, 3% hydrogen peroxide sprayed on and left for the same duration before scrubbing also works well. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during use.

However, these only address the visible growth. The musty smell indicates a deeper moisture issue. In an older Bur Dubai building with a weak exhaust fan, surface cleaning is a temporary fix. The mold's roots (hyphae) can penetrate porous grout, making it return.

The most effective long-term solution is to correct the humidity. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet surfaces with a squeegee. If the fan is underpowered, consider upgrading it. For persistent regrowth or a strong musty odor, the moisture may be behind the tiles. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters can identify the source, as remediation might require regrouting or addressing hidden leaks.
