What's the best local product to kill shower mold for good?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It's been incredibly humid in Dubai the last few weeks and the exhaust fan doesn't seem to be powerful enough. What's the most effective product I can find locally to kill this for good and stop it from coming back?

Black mold in shower grout is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. For a localized spot treatment, a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner or a concentrated bleach solution (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) applied directly to the grout can be effective. Look for products like Clorox or local equivalents at stores like ACE Hardware or Carrefour.
The key to preventing recurrence is addressing the humidity, not just the mold itself. Your exhaust fan is likely undersized for the space; it should be powerful enough to clear steam within 10-15 minutes of a shower. Run it during and for at least 30 minutes after showering. Wiping down wet tiles and squeegeeing the shower walls after each use removes the moisture mold needs to grow. For persistent issues, a small dehumidifier can help. If the mold is widespread, covers an area larger than one square meter, or keeps returning despite your efforts, the growth may be behind the tiles. In these cases, surface cleaning is a temporary fix. A professional inspection with moisture meters can identify hidden water damage, and lab testing of a swab sample can confirm the mold type, which guides the correct remediation method. |
