What's the best local product to remove bathroom mold for good?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the grout between the bathroom tiles. It’s worse in the corner behind the toilet where it's always a bit damp. I try to keep the fan on, but the humidity just doesn't seem to go away. What’s the most effective product I can get locally to kill this and stop it from coming back for good?

Black mold in bathroom grout is extremely common in Dubai due to the high ambient humidity and condensation from showers. For a small, visible patch, a concentrated hydrogen peroxide solution (like 3-6%) or a dedicated grout mold remover from Ace Hardware or similar stores is effective. Apply it, let it sit for 10 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush.

However, killing surface mold is a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved. That damp corner likely has poor air circulation, allowing condensation to sit in the grout. Running the exhaust fan during and for at least 30 minutes after every shower is essential. For a more permanent solution, consider a small dehumidifier or a moisture-absorbing product like DampRid to place in the bathroom.

If the staining is widespread, has penetrated deep into the grout, or has a musty odor, the growth may be behind the tiles. Surface cleaners won't reach this. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and possibly an air test from a company with a microbiology lab is needed to assess the extent. They can determine if tile removal and regrouting are necessary to properly resolve it.
