What's the best local product to remove shower mold?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom’s grout in the shower has started turning black in patches, especially in the corners near the floor. I’m in a Jumeirah villa and I’ve noticed it’s gotten way worse since the weather got more humid a couple of weeks ago. The exhaust fan is pretty weak, so I’m not sure if that’s the main culprit. What’s the most effective and safe product I can find locally to scrub this away and stop it from coming back?

Based on your description of recurring black discoloration in the grout of your Jumeirah villa, you are likely dealing with a common but persistent mold issue, exacerbated by the high ambient humidity we are currently experiencing in Dubai. The weak exhaust fan is a significant contributing factor, as it fails to evacuate the moisture-laden air, creating a perfect microenvironment for mold growth on porous surfaces like grout.

For a localized, non-toxic cleaning solution available locally, I recommend a concentrated hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner or a high-purity citric acid powder, which can be mixed with water to form a paste. These are effective biocides that can kill surface mold without the hazardous fumes associated with chlorine bleach. Apply the paste directly to the affected grout, allow it to dwell for 10-15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. However, this is a superficial fix.

The critical point is that discoloration on the surface often indicates a more extensive colonization within the porous grout and potentially behind the tiles. Scrubbing may not reach the root system, leading to rapid regrowth. The climate-controlled, airtight nature of Dubai villas means that any moisture issue, especially from a shower, creates a long-term problem that DIY products cannot resolve.

For a permanent solution, a professional assessment is strongly advised. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and borescopes to determine the extent of the problem behind the walls. Saniservice employs UAE-approved, advanced remediation techniques, including antimicrobial sealing of grout lines, to prevent recurrence.
