What's the best mold remover at ACE or Carrefour?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the grout between the bathroom tiles. It's worst behind the toilet where it's always a bit damp. What's the most effective local product I can buy from ACE or Carrefour to kill this for good?

Bleach-based sprays are the most common and effective over-the-counter option. Look for a product specifically labeled for mold and mildew removal, as these often contain surfactants that help the solution penetrate porous grout. For the black spots you're describing, a spray with a chlorine bleach base applied directly to the affected grout lines will be your best bet from a major retailer.

Before you start, ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated. Scrub the area first with a stiff brush and a simple soap solution to remove surface dirt and organic matter; this allows the bleach to make better contact with the mold. Then, spray the product, let it sit for the time specified on the label—usually 10-15 minutes—and scrub again before rinsing thoroughly. The key is to dry the area completely afterward using a squeegee, towel, and increased ventilation.

It's important to understand that these products kill surface mold but cannot reach the root system if it has grown deep into the grout or behind the tiles. In Dubai's constant high humidity, mold regrowth is very common because the underlying moisture condition remains. If the mold returns quickly or covers a large area (more than one square meter), the issue is likely persistent dampness from a plumbing leak or insufficient ventilation, and a professional inspection to find the moisture source is the only permanent solution.
