What's the best permanent solution for recurring mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold that keeps coming back in the corners of their bedroom, especially behind the dresser. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I scrub it away with bleach every few weeks, but after last week's humidity, it’s already black again. What is the most effective long-term solution to kill this mold for good and stop it from returning?

Recurring mold in your villa, especially in Jumeirah's humid climate, indicates an ongoing moisture source that bleach scrubbing can't address. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't kill the root structure penetrating porous materials like drywall or plaster. The high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for it to return quickly.

The permanent solution requires a two-step approach: correct removal and then addressing the moisture source. For removal, scrubbing with a dedicated fungicidal cleaner (not bleach) on affected surfaces is a start. However, if it's behind furniture and keeps returning, the wall's internal structure is likely compromised, requiring professional removal and replacement of affected building materials to eradicate the colony fully.

The critical step is identifying and rectifying the moisture issue. In villas, this is often condensation from AC supply ducts or diffusers causing cold spots on walls, or slight seepage from external walls during high humidity. Placing furniture too close to exterior walls restricts airflow, creating a cold, damp microclimate perfect for mold. A professional inspection uses thermal imaging and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact condensation source, which is often not visible.

Long-term, after proper remediation, ensure the room's AC is correctly balanced to minimize temperature differentials, use a dehumidifier if necessary, and maintain a gap between furniture and exterior walls to allow air circulation. For health concerns like persistent coughing, a lab analysis of the mold species can identify potential allergens, providing clarity on the household's specific risk.
