What's the best product to kill and prevent bathroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black, especially in the corners, and I just found a small patch of fuzzy mold on the ceiling above it. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the bathroom window doesn't seem to do enough. What’s the most effective and safe product I can pick up locally, like at ACE or Carrefour, to kill this for good and stop it from coming back?

Bleach-based sprays are effective for immediate surface mold removal on non-porous tiles, but they won't prevent regrowth on porous grout. For a longer-term solution on grout and ceilings, look for a hydrogen peroxide-based anti-fungal cleaner, which penetrates better and leaves a residual inhibitory effect. Local ACE Hardware stores typically carry brands like HG or Cif Professional mould spray.

The most critical step is moisture control. After every shower, run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes or open the window wide. Wipe down wet walls and squeegee the shower glass to remove standing water. In Dubai's climate, this is non-negotiable. For persistent humidity, a small dehumidifier or a better exhaust fan can make a significant difference.

If the fuzzy growth covers more than a square meter, returns quickly after thorough cleaning, or you notice a persistent musty odor, the issue may be within the wall or ceiling void. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture mapping is advised to find the hidden source, as surface treatment alone will be insufficient.
