What's the best product to kill bathroom black mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's started growing in the corners of our master bathroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it spreading along the grout between the wall tiles, especially behind the toilet. It’s gotten worse since the weather turned more humid last month. What's the most effective and safe product I can get locally to kill this for good?

Bathroom black mold in Dubai is often Cladosporium or Aspergillus, both of which can trigger the coughing and irritation you're describing, especially in children. The high humidity we've had is a classic accelerator for this growth.

For a localized patch on grout, a product like HG Mould Spray & Cleaner (available at Ace Hardware, Carrefour) is effective. For a more natural approach, a paste of baking soda and white vinegar applied directly to the grout can work. The key is mechanical removal—after applying any product, scrub the area vigorously with a stiff brush to physically remove the mold roots from the porous grout.

However, if the mold is spreading or has returned after previous cleaning, the issue is likely systemic moisture behind the tiles. Surface cleaning will only offer a temporary fix. In Dubai's climate, this persistent moisture often comes from a failed grout sealant allowing shower vapor to penetrate, or from a small plumbing leak behind the wall.

Given your children's symptoms and the mold's recurrence, a professional inspection is advisable. They can use a moisture meter to identify the exact water source and determine if the mold has spread into the wall cavity, which requires remediation beyond DIY cleaning. This is the only way to achieve a permanent solution and improve your indoor air quality.
