What's the best product to kill bathroom ceiling mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Marina apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the grout between the tiles on the bathroom ceiling. The room doesn't have a window and the extractor fan is pretty weak, so it never fully dries out after showers. What's the most effective product I can find locally to kill this and stop it from coming back?

Based on your description, the black spots are a classic case of mold growth, almost certainly caused by the high humidity and lack of ventilation you've identified. This is an extremely common issue in Dubai, especially in windowless bathrooms in areas like Marina, where the external humidity combines with shower steam, and weak extractor fans fail to remove the moisture.

For a localized, surface-level growth on non-porous tile grout, a highly effective and locally available product is a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner, such as HG Mould Spray. This is often preferable to bleach-based solutions as it kills the mold spores more effectively without leaving behind toxic residue or damaging the grout over time. You can find this at most Ace Hardware or Waitrose stores. Apply it directly to the affected grout, let it sit for the recommended time to penetrate and kill the roots, then scrub and wipe clean.

However, it is crucial to understand that the product only addresses the visible symptom. The root cause is the excess moisture. To stop it from coming back, you must improve ventilation. Run your extractor fan for at least 30-60 minutes after every shower and consider upgrading to a more powerful unit. Wiping down wet surfaces and using a dehumidifier can also help manage the micro-climate.

If the mold has a musty odor, covers a large area (generally more than one square meter), or if you suspect it has penetrated behind the tiles into the ceiling board, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Disturbing extensive growth can exacerbate spore release. We at Saniservice specialize in identifying the full extent of contamination and executing controlled remediations that include addressing the moisture source, in compliance with Dubai Municipality standards.
