What's the best product to kill bathroom mold permanently?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's suddenly appeared along the grout in our master bathroom shower. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it spreading like crazy after this recent humid spell. It’s a windowless bathroom in our Marina apartment, so it never really dries out completely. What’s the most effective product I can find locally to kill this for good and stop it from coming back?

For a windowless bathroom in a Marina apartment, the high humidity and lack of airflow create a perfect environment for mold growth. The most effective locally available products are chlorine-based mould cleaners, often sold as bleach sprays. Look for ones specifically formulated for bathrooms. They can quickly remove the visible stain.

However, these products only address the surface growth you can see. The mold's root structure (hyphae) can penetrate deep into the porous grout, making a permanent DIY solution very difficult. The product will "kill" it temporarily, but without changing the conditions, regrowth is almost guaranteed within a few weeks, especially during humid spells.

To stop it from coming back, you must control the moisture. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down the wet tiles and glass walls with a squeegee immediately. For a windowless bathroom, a small dehumidifier can make a significant difference. For extensive or recurring growth, the grout may be compromised and require professional removal and resealing.

Given the coughing symptoms, a professional inspection is advisable. Surface cleaning can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening air quality. An expert can assess if the growth is more extensive within the wall cavity and perform remediation that includes air scrubbing to capture spores, which is crucial for sensitive individuals.
