What's the best product to kill shower mold for good?« Back to Previous Page

Our bathroom in our Marina apartment has had this damp, musty smell for the past couple of weeks that I just couldn't place. I finally pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower today and found a bunch of black and green fuzzy mold growing underneath it. We run the exhaust fan, but the window is sealed shut and the humidity is just unbearable lately. What's the most effective product I can buy locally to kill this for good and prevent it from coming back?

Based on the conditions you've described in your Marina apartment, this is a classic case of mold proliferation driven by Dubai's high ambient humidity and inadequate ventilation, exacerbated by a sealed window. The mold under the silicone is a significant indicator that moisture has penetrated behind the waterproofing barrier.
For a DIY approach, the most effective locally available product is a concentrated, professional-grade biocide like Steri-Glass or a similar hydrogen peroxide-based mold remover, available at ACE Hardware or other large hardware stores. These are more effective than common bleach solutions, which only remove surface discoloration but do not kill the root system (hyphae) penetrating porous surfaces. However, critically, simply killing the mold is not a permanent solution. The underlying cause is the trapped humidity. Applying a new layer of sealant over contaminated surfaces will simply trap the dead spores and allow new growth to recur. The only permanent fix is full remediation: the existing compromised silicone must be completely removed, the substrate beneath professionally cleaned and treated with an antimicrobial coating, and then a new, high-quality sanitary silicone seal must be expertly applied. Given that the mold is hidden beneath sealant, the extent of the problem is likely greater than what is visible. We strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to detect hidden dampness within walls, a common issue in buildings here due to constant AC use and condensation.
