What's the best product to kill shower mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this black speckled mold appearing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. I think it's gotten worse since the weather got more humid a few weeks ago, and it's impossible to scrub off. What's the most effective product I can find locally to kill this for good?

For persistent grout mold, a chlorine-based bleach solution is often most effective. Look for products like Clorox or local equivalents, but ensure they're specifically formulated for bathroom surfaces to avoid damaging tile sealants. Mix one part bleach with three parts water, apply directly to the mold with an old toothbrush, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub and rinse thoroughly.

The high humidity in Dubai, especially during summer months, creates ideal conditions for mold growth in bathrooms where condensation is constant. Even with AC running, showers generate significant moisture that gets trapped in grout lines. Improving ventilation is crucial—run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showering and consider a dehumidifier if the problem is severe.

If the mold returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, the issue may be deeper than surface level, potentially growing behind the tiles. In such cases, a professional inspection can identify the moisture source and extent of growth. For health safety, especially with black speckled mold that is hard to remove, lab testing can confirm the mold type and appropriate remediation steps.
