What's the best way to kill bathroom mold and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

The bathroom in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has no window and after every shower, the walls are dripping with condensation. I wipe it down but a few weeks ago I started seeing these black speckles in the grout between the tiles behind the toilet. The humidity here is just relentless. What's the most effective way to kill this existing mold and what kind of dehumidifier or ventilator would you recommend for a rental to stop it from coming back?

For the existing mold, use a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water, applied directly to the grout. Let it sit for an hour before scrubbing with a stiff brush. Vinegar is effective on many common bathroom molds and is less corrosive than bleach, which can damage grout over time. For persistent spots, a paste of baking soda and water can provide extra abrasion.
Prevention is critical in our climate. The core issue is excess moisture with no ventilation. Since you're in a rental, a permanent exhaust fan may not be an option. Your most effective solution is a compact, portable dehumidifier. Place it in the bathroom and run it during and for 30-60 minutes after each shower. Look for a unit with a capacity of at least 10-12 liters per day and an auto-shutoff function for when the tank is full. Consistently wiping down wet surfaces immediately after showering also helps. If the black speckles return quickly or spread despite these efforts, it may indicate a more established colony or a hidden moisture issue. In such cases, a professional inspection with surface sampling can identify the mold type and guide a targeted remediation plan, which is particularly important for rental properties to document the issue for your landlord. |
