What's the best way to remove and prevent wardrobe mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be linked to a strange black speckling I just found in the back of our bedroom wardrobe, especially after the recent humidity. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed this, probably because we were storing some winter clothes in there. I’m worried about their health and that it will spread. What’s the absolute best way to clean this safely and, more importantly, how can I stop it from ever coming back in our climate?

That black speckling is likely mildew or mold, a common issue in wardrobes here due to Dubai's high humidity, especially after a humid spell. It thrives on organic materials like cotton, linen, or leather in dark, stagnant, slightly damp air.

For safe removal, first assess the extent. If it's a small area (under a square foot) and on a non-porous surface like the wardrobe's back panel, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective. Scrub gently with a microfiber cloth, ensuring you don't spread spores. Discard the cloth immediately after. For porous items like the clothes themselves, dry cleaning is the most reliable method to kill the mold.

However, cleaning only addresses the symptom. The absolute best way to prevent it from returning is to control the moisture. In our climate, this is a constant battle. The wardrobe's interior is likely a microclimate with higher humidity than the room. Ensure there is air circulation; leave wardrobe doors ajar periodically. Consider using a moisture absorber like silica gel packs or a small, plug-in dehumidifier designed for closets. Crucially, check that your room's AC is functioning correctly and that the space is being adequately dehumidified. The recent humidity suggests your AC might not be keeping up with the latent load.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a musty odor, or you are concerned about your children's persistent cough, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the mold species and its moisture source, which is often hidden condensation within the wall itself. In many Jumeirah villas, an exterior wall can become a cold bridge, leading to condensation behind the wardrobe that you never see. Proper remediation addresses this hidden source to provide a long-term solution, not just a surface clean.
