What's the child-safe way to remove shower mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’ve just discovered black spots growing along the grout in our master bathroom shower. It’s the bathroom we all use, and the ventilation isn't great even with the extractor fan running. What’s the most effective and child-safe way to get rid of this mold for good?

Black mold in shower grout is common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use, which creates condensation. For a child-safe removal, start with a paste of baking soda and water; scrub it into the grout with a stiff brush. Follow with a spray of distilled white vinegar, let it sit for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. This combination is effective on surface mold and safe for kids.

However, this only addresses the visible growth. The root cause is almost always poor ventilation and trapped moisture. Ensure your extractor fan is working properly and run it for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wiping down wet surfaces with a squeegee immediately after use is one of the most effective ways to prevent its return.

If the mold is extensive (covering a large area), has a musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the issue may be deeper within the walls or behind the tiles. In these cases, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the hidden moisture source and potential health risks, especially with children's persistent coughing. Certified inspectors can perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and concentration, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation approach.
