What's the fastest fix for AC mold on carpet?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my Jumeirah apartment seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet in the bedroom, and now I’m seeing these black splotchy patches spreading out from the wall. I just pulled the corner of the carpet back and the underside is completely covered in fuzz. What’s the absolute fastest way to deal with this to stop it from getting worse?

The absolute fastest way to stop it from getting worse is to immediately address the moisture source. Turn off that AC unit at the circuit breaker to prevent further leakage. Use towels to soak up all standing water from the carpet and a wet-dry vacuum if you have one. In Dubai's climate, with high ambient humidity, the damp carpet will continue to feed mold growth rapidly.

For the visible mold, you cannot just clean the surface. The fuzz underneath means the mold has penetrated the carpet backing and likely the carpet pad and possibly the subfloor. These materials are often non-porous and cannot be effectively cleaned; they must be removed and discarded. Attempting to spray it with bleach or other DIY solutions will only temporarily bleach the visible colour and will not address the root infestation, allowing it to return quickly.

This situation requires a professional inspection. The AC drain line or drip pan is likely clogged, a very common issue here due to dust and condensation. A technician must fix this leak at its source. For the carpet, a proper remediation involves cutting out and disposing of the affected section, including the pad, and treating the subfloor beneath. In many Jumeirah apartments, this level of moisture can also affect adjacent drywall. A proper assessment will determine the full extent to ensure it doesn't recur.
