What's the first step for black mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It’s gotten way worse since the weather got more humid last month. I’m really worried about our health and it ruining our stuff. What’s the first thing I should do to deal with this safely?

Move all clothing and items away from the affected area immediately to prevent cross-contamination and allow access. Avoid disturbing the mold by touching or scrubbing it, as this can release a large number of spores into your indoor air.

The rapid spread you've described, accelerated by our recent high humidity, strongly suggests an active moisture source. In a closet, this is often condensation from an adjacent external wall or a cold water pipe, but it could also be a hidden leak. Given the extent and the health concerns for your family, a professional inspection is the most prudent first step. They will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the moisture source definitively, which is critical—otherwise, the mold will return even if you clean the visible growth.

Until an inspector arrives, keep the closet door closed and the room well-ventilated. Run a dehumidifier in the bedroom if you have one, as maintaining humidity below 60% can help slow further growth. For health safety, those with respiratory conditions, allergies, or who are immunocompromised should avoid the area entirely.
