What's the first step for suspected black mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these black, speckled patches spreading along the corner of the bedroom wall behind our wardrobe. It’s our master bedroom in our villa in Mirdif, and it feels damp to the touch. With this humidity lately, I’m really worried it’s black mold, especially since my husband has started waking up with a stuffy nose. What’s the first step I should take to get this properly tested and handled?

The first step is to isolate the area and avoid disturbing it. Do not attempt to scrub or spray the patch yourself, as this can aerosolize spores. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow for air circulation, but avoid direct contact with the growth.

In Dubai's climate, this pattern is common. The combination of high humidity and continuous AC use creates cold surfaces, like exterior walls behind furniture, where condensation forms and promotes mold growth. The dampness you feel confirms this moisture issue.

For a proper diagnosis, you need a professional inspection. A certified inspector will conduct a moisture survey to find the water source and take a tape-lift or air sample for lab analysis. This is the only way to accurately identify the species, as many black-colored molds are not the notorious Stachybotrys, though any growth can cause the allergic symptoms you describe. The lab report will determine the necessary remediation scope, which for a villa in Mirdif must follow Dubai Municipality's guidelines for fungal cleanup. Addressing the underlying moisture is critical; otherwise, the growth will return even after the most thorough cleaning.
