What's the kid-safe way to remove bathroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the ceiling above the shower. With the humidity lately, it’s gotten worse really fast, and I’m worried my toddler is breathing in the spores every time I give him a bath. What’s the most effective and kid-safe way to get rid of this mold for good?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is common due to high humidity and condensation from hot showers meeting cool AC-chilled surfaces. For a kid-safe removal, start by addressing the moisture source—run the bathroom exhaust fan during and for at least 30 minutes after every shower to reduce humidity.

For small, surface-level spots, a solution of white vinegar or 3% hydrogen peroxide is effective and safer than bleach for a child’s environment. Apply it directly, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a dedicated brush and rinse. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores, and ensure the room is well-ventilated.

However, if the mold has penetrated porous materials like drywall or ceiling tiles, or covers an area larger than a square meter, cleaning the surface is a temporary fix. The underlying moisture has likely compromised the material, requiring professional assessment and remediation to remove it safely and prevent recurrence, especially with a toddler present.

In severe cases, a lab test can identify the mold species to confirm it's not a more hazardous type like Stachybotrys. For long-term prevention in a Dubai apartment, consider a dehumidifier or a professional assessment of your ventilation system's effectiveness against the local climate.
