What's the safest local product to kill shower mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black and green spots spreading in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower. It’s the bathroom with no window, so it never gets direct sunlight and always feels a bit damp. I'm worried about it affecting our health, especially my son's allergies. What's the most effective and safe product I can find locally to kill this mold for good?

Bleach-based cleaners are effective for surface mold on non-porous tile but won't kill roots in porous grout. Look for a hydrogen peroxide-based mold remover or a concentrated anti-fungal cleaner from local hardware stores like ACE Hardware or Carrefour; they are less toxic and don't produce the harsh fumes that bleach does in a confined, windowless bathroom.
For the mold to be "killed for good," the underlying moisture issue must be solved. In Dubai's climate, the constant high humidity combined with a bathroom's steam creates a perfect environment for regrowth. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet walls and squeegee the shower stall to remove standing water. A small dehumidifier can also help reduce the ambient dampness between uses. If the mold is extensive, has penetrated deep into the grout, or returns quickly after cleaning, the issue may be behind the tiles. At that point, surface cleaning is temporary. A professional inspection can identify the moisture source—often poor sealant or internal condensation from cold water pipes—and recommend remediation, which may involve regrouting or improving ventilation. For health concerns with allergies, a lab test can identify the mold species to better assess the risk. |
