What's the safest way to clean mold in a bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks now, especially in their bedroom, and I just pulled their large wooden wardrobe away from the wall to find a patch of black and green mold spreading behind it. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I'm worried the humidity is getting trapped there. What's the safest and fastest way to clean this to make sure it doesn't affect their health?

Mold growth behind furniture, especially in humid coastal areas like Jumeirah, is common due to condensation from AC units interacting with warm walls. The safest approach depends on the size; if the patch is larger than one square meter, professional remediation is strongly advised to prevent spore dispersal and ensure complete removal.

For a smaller patch, first address the moisture source. This is almost always trapped humidity from lack of air circulation. Keep the wardrobe permanently a few inches from the wall. Ensure the AC is set to a consistently cool temperature to reduce humidity and that the room's ventilation is adequate.

To clean, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by closing the door and covering the air vent. Scrub the mold off the wall with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it does not prevent regrowth and can damage surfaces. After cleaning, thoroughly dry the area with a fan. Discard any porous materials like cardboard boxes or damaged items that were in direct contact with the mold.

Given the health symptoms you've described, a professional inspection is prudent. They can use moisture meters to identify hidden dampness within the wall and conduct air or surface sampling to identify the mold species, which determines the potential health risk and required remediation protocol. This is the only way to be certain the environment is safe for your children.
