What's the safest way to remove mold from my villa?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I just found black spots behind their bedroom wardrobe. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for years but it’s gotten worse since the humidity started. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of this mold without putting my family at risk from harsh chemicals?

The safest approach starts with identifying the source of the moisture. In Dubai villas, this is often condensation from AC units, a small leak, or humidity seeping through exterior walls. The black spots behind the wardrobe suggest poor air circulation trapping humid air, a common issue here.

For a small area, a solution of white vinegar and water or a diluted soap solution can be effective. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area gently to avoid sending spores into the air, and dry it completely with a fan. Never mix cleaning products, especially bleach and vinegar, as this creates toxic gas.

However, with children experiencing respiratory symptoms and the mold being out of sight, professional assessment is strongly recommended. The mold you see is often just a fraction of the colony growing inside the wall. A proper inspection includes moisture mapping and often an air quality test to identify the species, as some types common in humid climates can be more problematic.

Remediation for a larger issue involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores during removal, and treating the area with EPA-approved biocides. The most critical step is correcting the moisture source—this could mean improving ventilation, adding a vapour barrier, or repairing an AC drain line. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide the most definitive before-and-after testing to confirm the environment is safe.
